Fun Festive Stirrup DIY Project

Final stirrup decoration

Are you looking for a fun project to integrate your love of horses with your holiday décor? This simple four-step craft project looks perfectly at home in your house or in the tack room. Utilizing stirrup irons in an unexpected way, this DIY equestrian décor project is quick and easy to put together and only requires a handful of materials. So bust out that metal polish and clean up those old unused stirrup irons, because this is one seasonal project you’ll want to get started on immediately. They also make fantastic gifts, consider making an extra for the barn party Yankee swap or for your riding instructor.

Materials

Material
  • Stirrup iron or Western stirrup
  • Bell
  • Small bunch of evergreens branches (natural or artificial)
  • Festive ribbon
  • Floral wire or other thin, pliable wire
  • Scissors, tree trimmers, and/or wire cutters
  • Optional: Bows, holly berries, ornaments, or other holiday adornments

Instructions

1. Begin by trimming your greens to the desired size and shape using scissors, tree trimmers or wire cutters. Arrange your greens in the desired location on the stirrup iron (try centered, off to the side, or at the bottom) and securely fasten them using floral wire.

2. Use a short piece ribbon or an ornament hook to affix the bell to the eye of the stirrup iron.

3. Cut your ribbon to approximately 18 inches, slide it through the eye of the iron and tie a bow so that there is about a three to four-inch loop below the bow from which to mount the decoration.

4.  Attach any other additional adornments using floral wire. You can make it as simple or as ornate as you wish!

After you have completed your project, you only have one thing left to do: find a place to show off your creation. We think it looks lovely hanging on doors and windows or sitting on the mantle!
