Shapley’s EquiTone Color Enhancing Shampoo Review

Audra and her horse competing

As someone who spends all summer showing on the road at American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) horse shows, it is important that my horse looks exceptional in the show ring.  My black mare has a tendency to bleach out in the summer sun, which gives her a reddish hue, especially along the back, rump and belly areas. Over the years, I have tried a number of products to maintain her dark coloring and help the black to shine through. In my experience, I have found that the  Shapley’s EquiTone Color Enhancing Shampoo (Black) works the best to keep her rich color from fading away.

Everytime I bathe my mare, Dazzle, I use the Shapley’s EquiTone. For maximum results, I apply the shampoo at full strength and allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes before rinsing. I apply it liberally, especially where she tends to fade the most, such as the back and belly areas. As the shampoo cleans and conditions her coat, it also adds a vitality and richness to her coloring. Not only does it deepen her color, the shampoo cleans her coat and leaves her mane and tail soft and shiny.

Shapley's EquiTone Color Enhancing Shampoo

It may sound trivial, but I also love the aroma of this shampoo! If you like the smell of black licorice, you will think that your horse smells amazing after a bath with the EquiTone Color Enhancing Shampoo.

I use the Black EquiTone for my mare, but it comes in a number of different formulas. According to Shapley’s, equestrians should use Red EquiTone for chestnuts, red bays, and sorrels; Black EquiTone for dark bays, browns, and blacks; Gold EquiTone for palominos and buckskins; and White EquiTone for grays and light coats. Each of these formulations are specifically designed to bring out the best in your horse’s coat.I love how deep and rich Dazzle’s black coat is in the show pen, and I attribute this to the  Shapley’s EquiTone Color Enhancing Shampoo (Black).  I have had numerous comments from judges and other exhibitors on her stunning shiny black coat.  While shiny may not win classes, it certainly helps to have a product in your arsenal that presents your horse to its very best in the show ring! I recommend this shampoo to any equestrian who wants to maximize their horse’s turnout, both in and out of the show ring!
