For nearly three decades, The Cheshire Horse has been a beloved destination for equestrians, pet owners, and farm caretakers in the Northeast. What started as a small tack shop in an outbuilding has grown into a trusted name in the world of animal care, with stores in both New Hampshire and New York, alongside an expansive online presence. At the heart of The Cheshire Horse is a dedication to quality products, exceptional customer service, and an unwavering passion for the animals and the people who care for them.
Humble Beginnings: A Family’s Vision
The story of The Cheshire Horse traces back to 1997, when Marianne and Doug Hamshaw made the bold decision to open a tack shop in Keene, New Hampshire. The Hamshaws, well-established in the community through their successful family business, Hamshaw Lumber, saw an opportunity to serve the equestrian community. Marianne, an avid equestrian since childhood, recognized a gap in the market—a need for a specialty store that catered to the region’s horse lovers.
Born and raised in the Midwest, Marianne’s deep-rooted passion for horses began at the age of 8 when she started taking riding lessons. She later purchased her first horse in the mid-1980s, after moving with her family to a property that included fields and a large barn. Alongside her daughter Elizabeth, she ran a summer camp where kids could bring their ponies and learn about horsemanship. It was through her involvement at a local tack shop in Westmoreland that Marianne realized how much the area needed a retail space dedicated to equestrian needs. When that shop closed, she and her husband decided to act on the opportunity.
With a small outbuilding on Hamshaw Lumber’s property and a lot of ambition, Marianne opened the first Cheshire Horse location in 1997. The store quickly gained traction due to Marianne’s passion and the Hamshaws’ commitment to customer service and business excellence. With Doug’s background in business and their combined vision, The Cheshire Horse grew rapidly, expanding its offerings and customer base.
Expansion and Growth
By 2002, it was clear that The Cheshire Horse had outgrown its original 1,200-square-foot space in Keene. The business moved to a 4,000-square-foot location in the same town, which allowed for more inventory and room to serve the growing equestrian community. The following year, a second location opened in Saratoga Springs, NY, to cater to customers across state lines.
In 2007, The Cheshire Horse took its next major leap forward with the opening of its flagship store in Swanzey, NH. The Hamshaws, along with local architects, designed a 23,000-square-foot open-concept store, inspired by the aesthetic of a traditional red barn with an indoor arena, that perfectly combines functionality with charm. The new store housed a 13,000-square-foot showroom and office space, and 10,000 square feet of warehouse space, with the added convenience of a drive-through feed and bedding service for customers.
The Swanzey location became the new heart of The Cheshire Horse, offering everything from tack to apparel, to pet supplies and farm essentials. Customers could also take advantage of a range of in-store services, including saddle fitting, blanket cleaning, and equipment rentals. Additionally, a cozy lounge area complete with a large-screen TV, comfy seating, and coffee helped set the tone for an enjoyable shopping experience.
A Commitment to Family and Community
The Cheshire Horse has always remained true to its family roots. Doug and Marianne’s three children, Elizabeth, Ken, and Scott, have each played important roles in the business. Elizabeth, who returned to New Hampshire after an early career in marketing and website design, was integral in launching the company’s website in 2004 and helping the Swanzey store grow its equine, pet, and apparel sales after moving to its current location. Elizabeth now serves as the general manager of the business.
Over the years, many dedicated employees have been integral to the Cheshire Horse story, working alongside the Hamshaw family to grow the business and take on leadership roles. Some have been with the company for more than 25 years and counting. Marianne and Doug’s young grandchildren have even started to contribute through their first jobs stocking shelves for the business this past year. As the next generation of equestrian enthusiasts and animal lovers emerges, the family-run legacy of The Cheshire Horse is sure to continue for many years to come.
As a hands-on horse owner, Marianne has always ensured that the day-to-day operations reflect the same love and care that led her to open The Cheshire Horse in the first place. Over the years, the family’s commitment to customers, employees, and community has remained central to the business’s identity.
The Legacy Continues
Today, The Cheshire Horse stands as a testament to the Hamshaw family’s entrepreneurial spirit, dedication to service and quality, and love for the equestrian lifestyle. While the business has expanded and evolved, the focus on family, community, and customer service has remained unchanged. The Cheshire Horse continues to be a hub for all things related to horses, pets, and farm life, offering expert advice, high-quality products, and a personal touch that makes it stand out from larger chains.
Whether you’re shopping at the Swanzey or Saratoga location, browsing the website, or visiting one of the many events and workshops that The Cheshire Horse hosts, it’s clear that this family-owned business is more than just a store—it is a hub for the equestrian community. A commitment to quality, service, and the love of animals will always remain at the heart of The Cheshire Horse’s mission.
